Stuart N. Brotman has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the United States-Israel Science and Technology Foundation, which has offices in Tel Aviv and Washington, DC. The Foundation serves as the administrative arm of the U.S.-Israel Science and Technology Commission, which was created in 1994 by President Clinton and Prime Minister Rabin to foster long-range cooperation in the development and commercialization of technology by U.S. and Israeli companies. It performs a vital function in implementing the policies and programs determined by the Commission to fulfill its mission of fostering collaboration in science and technology between American and Israeli industry.

During the past five years, the Foundation has approved funding for a range of projects that involve U.S. and Israeli partners, including the development of next generation gamma cameras; solar thermal electrical generation; aquaculture; seawater desalient of methyl bromide emissions and Next Generation Internet technologies.

Since June 2000, the Foundation has been overseeing three strategic panels in information technology, biotechnology and standards harmonization, comprised of U.S. and Israeli business experts. In 2001 and beyond, its primary goals will be to build the infrastructure for enhanced cooperation in U.S.-Israeli high technology development, identify and seek to remove impediments to cooperation and harmonize regulations and standards.

Brotman is one of six private sector representatives four from the U.S., two from Israel) invited to join the Board, which had been limited to high-level U.S. and Israel government officials since its formation in 1995. The Foundation's Israeli directors include Carmel Vernia, Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Professor Zehev Tadmor, Chairman of the Samuel Neeman Institute at the Technion, Israel's Institute of Technology in Haifa.
